What is peoples thoughts on it being just 5 episodes on consectutive nights.
Is this the way forward or the drumming down of the programme.
I for one do not like the idea on series/season 3 being just 5 episodes.

Well they really had a problem this year.

Mr.Barrowman is just far too busy to commit to a 9 month shoot... Plus the new Head of Drama in Wales who would normally oversee the show is just settling in and has the relaunch of Doctor Who to plan.... Plus they are having to 'downsize' the staffing levels at Wales because of the Doctor Who 'gap-year'. Basically instead of two series (Doc Who and Torchwood) they are making just one series (which will be half Torchwood and half Doctor Who).

On the other hand the fact that it is moving to BBC1 is quite a big deal! And to show the series on 5 concecutive nights will make it a massive event for television... It hardly ever happens! Which should give the show as high a profile as Doctor Who has!

I'm sure Torchwood won't be abandoned afer that. If anything, I think its promotion will cause the show to be more refined. But they will have to see if they can do Torchwood without Captain Jack if they want to do a full series. He loves the series and it is mostly responsible for him exploding on to our screens they way he has this last year or so! But the man would have to turn down so many amazing opportunities!

I remember the last few seasons of the X-Files which only had occassional cameos of David Duchovny and the format really seemed to 'strain'! I wouldn't want that to happen to Torchwood.

I don't think it's a good idea. It'll be over and gone too quickly and if you miss an episode, there isn't really enough time to catch up before the next one airs.

oh wow adrian that is a really good thought, how did you think of it?

I didnt like the idea at first so the storyline better make up for it. series 4 might go back to being thriteen episodes over 13 weeks anyway. not sure though, they wanna see how series 3 does first.

I'm just glad we are getting a series 3, something at least to look forward to. It doesn't really bother me how many episodes there is although of course I'd like more rather than less but its not up to us in the end.

Have to look on the bright side, at least we are getting a series 3, better that nothing.

Hopefully once TW has been establised on BBC1, we will be back on track for a full set of episodes.

I like the idea of a 5 episode Series 3. Only thing is, I'd like to see a Series 4 BEFORE 2010!!! I hate the idea of having to wait an entire year. It's like what they did with Battlestar Galactica, breaking it up with long periods of no new shows. More Torchwood! More Doctor Who! Let's go team!!!

Wow two series of Torchwood in one year *dreams* that'd be amazing. But I suppose people are right. A five episode series is better than no series at all

I think that's more likely that it being axed. Even if they don't win over new viewers, they've still got all the old ones! I doubt it'll be axed just because BBC1 viewers object.

it'll be great.we won't have to wait a whole week til the next episode. Like a movie, or more like 2 split up over a week.

How many of you have sat and watched back to back episodes? I know I have.

lilflower

But if it's all in one week, it will be over in one week!!!!!!!!! Then we willl have to wait a YEAR for the next season!!!

I'm disappointed that there isn't a full season but excited that they're making the bold move to show so much at once on BBC1! It'll mean that the tellybox viewing public will struggle to miss at least some of it, being plastered on their screens for five nights which could be an incentive to increase audience figures and pave the way for many more series...?

ScarlettxHearts
20th August 2008, 14:18
i'm kinda excited and kinda bummed.

well first theres going to be no owen and no tosh which upsets me but back to the point.

as much as waiting a week for the next episode annoyed me i'll miss having something to look forward to ever week. 5 days will go by really quickly and then it's over and that's it for a year.

but if they have lots of janto and general awesomness i'm sure i'll live...i'll just watch them all again like I do now because I never get bored of them [x

and like people have said at least there is going to be a third series.

So, I'm from the US, and I have a vague grasp of the way the BBC works, but is it a pretty big deal that Torchwood is moving to BBC 1? I was wondering if the short series was like a trial run for a bigger audience or something.

What happens if a show does not do well on BBC 1? Does it move to a different channel, or just get cut?

(sorry, I don't even have proper television, so I'm a bit out of the know on how these things work)

The doctor11
20th August 2008, 19:38
the series would be cut if it wasnt pulling its weight, it is a good thing for us because it means that the BBC prize it and think that it will bring them more younger viewers to BBC1

Kaleidoscope
21st August 2008, 17:02
I doubt they'd cut it if it didn't make the target audiences on BBC1. It's still a popular show so I suspect they'd drop it back to BBC2 rather than just get rid of it. But of course if the audience numbers slipped from it being aired on BBC2, then yeah it would eventually be cut.

I'm quite excited by the 5 episode series, because it means there is going to have to be a huge plot, like apocalyptic in scale, plenty of character development that could potentially get neglected doing the whole Alien of the Week thing all over again, and, because I don't have BBC3 and the reception of BBC2 has gone to the dogs in my area, I get to see it in all its technicolour glory! (Shallow? Me? Never!)

However, I am worried that they might try to introduce too quickly new team members replacing Owen and Tosh and that would be disappointing. I wouldn't mind trying to have them fitting into the dynamic, sparking off the Trio, but I don't want newbies taking precedence over Jack, Ianto, Gwen and Rhys' story arcs. If that makes sense. If they go the whole newby route.

And it will be different. And it may give the cast time to pursue other projects as well as come back for a longer fourth series late 09 - in time for Christmas!

No i don't really want just 5 episodes... but there were lots of rumours about no series 3 so at least we got 1... but it would still end quickly :scared: :yikes2:

I think that its a good idea to take a break from the traditional series. I don't know if any of you guys remember but a while back there was another 5 day series drama based on this kid going to jail wrongly, it was a huge it and even stayed on the iPlayer for a while, mainly because it was so intense over a shorter period of time.

Also I think that it will give the writers a chance to come up with some exciting stuff for series 4 (*crosses fingers*)

Kaleidoscope
17th September 2008, 22:16
I don't remember that. But you could be right. People might get hooked more easily to dramas shown on consecutive days. Drama's that are over two nights and things are always really popular.

The doctor11
17th September 2008, 22:48
i remember it and i think it makes the series more interesting

 Hahaha!

I couldn't do that! Don't give me a chocolate bar and tell me to eat it in three days, it'll be gone in 5 minutes!

I don't really like the idea of only 5 episodes, but i'm keeping my mind opened, let's see what they do with those 5 hours. I've seen some amateur shooting videos and pictures so far, and it looks awesome to me.

Well, I call this deprivation, to be totally honest. I love Torchwood, and I am a lifelong fan of Doctor Who as well. Having been used to 2 full series' of 13 episodes, to have only 5 in one week in the entire year is not going to be enough, especially as there is no series of Doctor Who this year as well. I know that all of the episodes will be good, because it's Torchwood, but for it all to be over in one week, well, words can't describe how i feel about that. I for one am a person who can sit and watch torchwood for hours at a time, like only this afternoon, i was watching torchwood series 1, eps 7-13. Thats more episodes than wots gona b series 3 put together. I expect it to be good, and of course i want plenty of ianto in it, but 5 episodes is not enough for me. :nope:

TBH when i heard its gonna be 5 episodes on consecutive nights i kind of thought thats the last nail in torchwoods coffin. i just don't know who will be home to watch 5 nights in a row of torchwood?
still its a plus its going to bbc 1.

the UK really sucks with t.v shows, i mean im hoping bones has a 24 to 26 episode run this year to make up for missed episodes because of the strike last year, thats like 20 extra episodes on torchwood.

26th November 2008, 16:04
I never thought 13 episodes was enough, especially compared to other sci-fi programmes (okay, US ones granted) that have 20-24 episodes a series. Running consecutive nights will just make it all over too soon. I'm really depressed about it, but I guess it's better than nothing
