I agree with your defnitions, although I'd say sweet about Rose..but I guess it was a bit romantic too. Martha...I have to say I just couldn't like. I like her much better in Torchwood. She has found her niche and seems happy.
Donna I loved from the first episode The Runaway Bride. She swears! She yells!! She has a temper! I love that! I am so going to enjoy Series 4. I'll keep you all informed with a plethora of gasps and squeaks and squeals. :omg::wee:

Dont be fooled by Catherine Tates comedy roots, shes an amazing actress, she will blow you away.
Is it being shown on TV or have you bought the DVDs?
Kefirah
14th October 2011, 21:32
Bought the DVDs. They're playing...um...Series 2 on TV reruns now. Right, yeah, it was "Girl In The Fireplace" on TV the other day. Our Sci-Fi Channel is called "SPACE".
I love Catherine Tate..she is such a nice REAL looking person, expressive, nice hair, nice eyes. Watching so much British TV I just can't BELIEVE how unrealistic American actresses look now!! I am very attracted to Catherine Tate...a woman I could fall in love with, I think. I'm going to be watching this series very closely :)

Catherine Tate had such good chemistry with David Tennant, I love watching those two. I always thought Rose worked better with Christopher Eccleston.

I just loved the fact that we had a companion who wasn't in love with the Doctor! It got a bit dull after Rose and Martha

Donna was a dream and more like an old fashion companion. I still didn't like Amy jumping the Doctor. I don't remember Rose or Martha being so sexually attracted to the Doctor. They just loved him nothing wrong with that,
at least they didn't marry him like River did.
Do you think the Doctor loves River because she was conceived on the Tardis and therefore closer to being similar to his real wife the Tardis? I wonder if the Tardis gets jealous with all these Girls and Jack hanging around. Why can't a man, excluding Jack fall for the Doctor for a change? And why is the Doctor seen in the 21st century on TV suddenly sexualized at all?

I definitely thought Martha was in love with the Doctor..not so much Rose..hard to say. I always saw her relationship as a bit of Father Figure with Chris Eccleston and then a bit more romantic with David...definitely a deep love, but maybe not sexual. Martha...jealousy and love.
@Meef, I am only at the beginning of Series 4. I think your comments should be put behind spoilers, please.

Sorry Kefirah :sorry: and Thanks Longarm for putting my questions in spoiler form for me. :hugs:
You see I have never thought of the Doctor as sexual. With 9 he seemed more amused by sexual antics and flirting and not really into "dancing" much. But with 10 that changed and suddenly you have a handsome man (mind you I had a thing for Tom Baker when I was young and first saw Doctor Who on TV) that seems to bring in a younger audience in the female department. I'm not saying that there weren't women into Doctor Who before, it just wasn't that many. I had a really interesting conversation with a man that had attended every Gallifrey One Convention and he said that with in the last few years the number of women into Doctor Who as well as those that came to the con went up. I noticed that last year, seemingly a lot more women to men and lots of Amy Pond cos players. I find that interesting and now with Matt Smith it seems that Doctor Who has hit a point of being part of Pop cultural more these days and playing to the young adult more then the child. Nothing wrong with it but that means more romance to agree with its audience needs for fantasy. I had to laugh that when we went into NYC a few weeks ago there was a display of fashion manikins in a window sporting various different dress that could have been considered almost identical to Matt Smith look as the Doctor. The only thing missing was the bow tie!

Well, there's the end of series 3 when Martha tells the Doctor that she's been in love with him for the whole of their time together. And when he's human and she says 'You had to fall in love with a human, and it wasn't me'
Rose - defiantely. You compare everything the Doctor gives her with what she's got now, and she fell in love with the romance of it all. I don't think she loved 9 the way that she loved 10. It becomes clear in this series.

There is still a sexualization that did take place with 10 that wasn't really there with past Doctor's. It is apparent more so with 11 as we see the Doctor as a younger man and attractive. This could be why so many people latched on to David's 10 than they did Chris's 9. David did seem to lead Doctor Who into a golden age of fan girl activity sexualizing The Doctor for all. I think the reaction to sexualization is pronounced more when people talk about who's sexy, hot, attractive, sweet as an actor/actress over how well they give a performance or the reaction is vague or polite and often without criticism and criticism from others is met with fury. It can be more about stimulation then talent which seems to be a product of today's marketing. I often find that when people are very attracted to an actor they think everything they do is great even if the performance is sub par. When blinded by looks one tends to react to the over all performance as what the character can do stimulate the senses not if it is generally a great performance. To put a person into to the mood writers create a romance so some can Mary Sue their way into the show or book. I think that was Rose's job. She was suppose to make the viewer feel attracted to The Doctor and be led into the romance. I'm sure it works just as well on both sexes. As I'm sure we all get stimulated by the actors/actresses we love even if they aren't fantastic all the time. We are human after all.
I would say that Martha was the more of a crush or feeling emotions something more a kin to a fan girl, pining over The Doctor like she was in line for an autograph and always there with a story about him for other like we tend to share about our favorite actors online or at conventions. I some how saw Martha as a parody for many fans of Doctor Who or fans for any show or actor in General. She just always came across like Kim in Bye Bye Birdie just hooked on the image of the Birdie until she one day grew up and realized he was just some guy. Well with Martha she still loved The Doctor but it was more as a friend not a crush anymore. Martha at the end of 10's life was very similar to Kim at the end of Birdie, both young ladies went off to find their own lives but never forgetting the one that bought them to that place. In the case of Kim she woke up from a dream to find Birdie wasn't all that great, Martha was able to mature her feelings finding The Doctor to be just a guy but still extraordinary.

I love how everyone (including me!!!) thinks David Tennant is attractive. He's a skinny little rake with wild hair, very bizarre expressions..but oh my gosh he is gorgeous! But I thought Chris was too! lol
I agree that with Martha it was probably more of a crush. I think that's why she left, because she thought the feelings were so strong that she couldn't stay with him if he didn't feel the same way, and when you have a crush, that one-sided-ness of the feelings can be overwhelming. And it took her being away for her to settle her feelings and really find out what she wanted. That's what it takes sometimes...being apart to know what you really need or want.
But when it's really love you stick with them, no matter what. So in that way, I can definitely agree that maybe Rose's love was a deeper love.

Sorry to disappoint sweetie, but I am not in the Tennant = Gorgeous camp. He's ok, not been hit with the ugly stick or anything, but he doesn't rock my world. *grin*

Forgive me, I have a tendancy to lump some posts together in my mind...seeing a few people talking about romance and the Doctor..and I think everyone is. It's my failing in reading posts and not differentiating individual opinions. I'll be more careful.
Thanks Angelkitty and Hollyb! Keep me on my toes and a better poster.

I'm nearly at the end now...and the word "spoilers" takes on a whole new meaning! lol I have seen part of a Matt Smith episode, so strangely enough when I saw someone in "Silence of the Library", I KNEW the importance...but I still don't know enough.
"Turn Left" is amazing! Road not travelled and all that. Wow! And omg, I am almost to afraid to watch the last two episodes. The last time we heard those "two words" it was pretty intense....I have a feeling it will be worse. I'm finding the endings the hardest to take..the endings of each series. I actually stopped at "Turn Left" and went back to Series 1 again, for some comfort episodes.
