I got this link from a thread on the imdb message boards. It shows an interesting interpretation of the roles each member of the team plays. Not the structure of the team, but how they interact on a more personal level.
I thought it was interesting and the poster does have some decent evidence to back up their theory

I've read that post. Not sure I agree with it.
I've got my own interpretation of Ianto. I think Ianto takes over the job Jack did with the Doctor. In the background, following orders, making tea.
Further evidence of this is in, the last 3 DW episodes. In Utopia, the Doctor takes his coat off and hands it to Jack, when given an order, Jack responds with 'Yes sir'. In Sound of the Drums, when they are in Martha's flat, Jack makes the tea.
Here's my theory for TW. Jack is the Doctor, Gwen is Rose/Martha, Ianto is Jack, without the flirting.

Knowing how fantastic you think Tosh is that's actually a little disturbing
That is a cool little article (is it an article?) anyway, humm. Think I would agree with that actually, it makes sense.

I thought it was interesting to read but I don`t agree with it.
Mainly because with a serie like Torchwood it feels wrong to me to compare it with family dynamics.
There always is a certain undertone in Torchwood(Gwen/Jack,Jack/Ianto etc).
Torchwood is even hard to compare to Doctor who, eventhough it is part of the whouniverse
