For me what made this series was the quality of the actors. I think that even the people I found despicable were great because they did such a good job at what they did. Ian Gelder in particular as Dekker just skeeved me with his acting, while Peter Capaldi as Frobisher was magnificent.
But one thing that didn't work for me was Lucy Cohu as Jack's daughter. There were times when her expression seemed so wrong for her character (in particular the scene when Johnson was showing her the footage on the computer in the military base.) She seemed to be smiling (perhaps she thought it was grimace) but it came across as being so wrong.
I know this gal has won awards for her work, so maybe it was just a mis-casting in this case, but in talking to others, I've found I'm not alone in the way I reacted to her.
How about you? Who was your favorite characters, outside of the regular cast? Who did you not care for?

I think my favourite new characters were Ianto's family. This may be because I come from a similar background, but I saw something very real and identifiable with Rhiannon. I liked how she was torn between wanting to help Ianto and wanting to protect her children. The actress, Katy Wix (I think), did a really great job in portraying her. I also liked Ianto's brother-in-law, Johnny, again, he was a very believable character, a bit of a tactless lout, but his heart was in the right place. And also, Ianto and Rhiannon looked they could be siblings, which I think was excellent casting.

I agree, the transition between her in Day One, being cool and distant with Jack, to Day Two and Three, being very worried about him, was a little jarring and inconsistent and I didn't really believe it.

I agree, these two were my favourites as well, and one of my favourite scenes is the 'the talk' scene (I just can't get myself to call it Ianto's coming out, because ... well, just because it doesn't feel right to call it that), because their interaction was done so well, so subtle, so sibblingly (is that even a word?). And Johnny, oh boy, so perfectly cast (not that I even remember the actor's name), but type of man (well, boy, more like), he played. I could so see Ianto meeting him for the first time and hating everything about him, as restrained and stoic Ianto can be, as wild and free Johnny is. Making money out of a terrible situation (I couldn't help but laugh).
Definitely Rhi and Johnny.
As for Dekker :shudders: he just gave me the creeps. I'm so surprised everyone's giving Jack a hard time for making the decision, while I was seething over Dekker's eagerness to use Steven. I can't be the only one who noticed that he seemed so pleased just thinking about it. really, really creepy. Which of course is a compliment to the actor, and I do praise him for portraying such a creepy character in such a wonderful manner, but I can't help but absolutely hate Dekker most (strange, I know)
I also loved Clem, and most of the rest of the cast. Well done.
As for Alice ... I'm in two minds, I thought she was good at times and lacking something in others, then again ...being Alice, daughter of a fixed point in time and space, can't be easy.
[edit:a7bka3ny]The only thing that's been bugging me is Rhi's age compared to Ianto. I suck at guessing ages, and I haven't looked hers up, but somehow Rhi didn't strike me as an older or younger sister at all, the way she interacted with Ianto, she seemed more like a twin. I can't really explain it. I do know that if she was meant to be an older sister, it didn't come across as such to me, at all[/edit:a7bka3ny]

I loved Katy Wix as Rhiannon (she's 2 years older than Gareth by the way) I thought that was brilliant casting. Also Peter Capaldi was fantastic!

Though I'm very conscious of my inability to guess ages, I'd say she doesn't look it :)
(that, and I kind of like the twin idea)

Forgive me if this has been mentioned already (i'm too lazy to look it up), but wasn't the actor who does the Dalek voices in there with the politicians on some of the episodes?
 That's right, Nicholas Briggs.
He was the spin doctor guy trying to be positive about the "population cull". Scary!
For me, Peter Capaldi did an amazing job - I was by turns angry and sympathetic with him.
All of the actors involved were fantastic, though. :clapper: (not that I am a fan of the plot).

I thought Peter Capaldi was absolutely fabulous. As I watching it I felt myself just being awed by his talent. So yeah, I really, really thought he was great.
I thought every actor did an amazing job though. That is one thing that was really great about CoE, casting and acting. They were all fantastic. I also really liked Ianto's family. Katy Wix was really good as was the guy who played Johnny. And the kids all did great too. I loved little Mica, she was so adorable I just wanted to hug her. :D
So yeah I was really impressed with the actors in CoE. A big well done to them all. 8D

My Mum used to know the actor who played Dekker... she really liked him a lot, I know it didnt look it but she thought he was the most gorgeous man.

The little girl looked a little like Ianto. She was cute. Rhi behaved a little like an older sister, who knows when to ask questions and when to listen. The actor who played her husband, at first I wasn't quite sure how old he was. He was diffeintly a "baby faced actor". How did we hear Jack's phone voice mail? That must have been indestructable cell phone to surivive the blast. I liked Alice up to a point. There are plot bunnies that get in the way, with her that I cannot explain very well.

My voice mail isn't stored on my cellphone, it's on my phone company's server. If I lose or break the phone, I can still retrieve my email when I get it replaced.
