Did anyone else notice that U.N.I.T. featured a bit more in COE that in any other recent episode of the whole DW franchise? Also, they are no longer the "United Nations Intelligent Taskforce", but now the "Unified Intelligence Taskforce"? Methinks this might open up a new version of TW, but perhaps diversified and under the overall authority of U.N.I.T. They were, of course, the original earth-based military force the Doctor associated/tolerated at various times while saving the planet.

With Jack suffering emotional scarring elsewhere for the moment, a gathering of familiar and new characters under this new umbrella makes recruiting easier, from the hard Johnson who has a core code that would serve well (even if initiative might need a little assistance), to the dark, self-confessed "man in the background", Dekker who, given the equipment, might be a useful - or dangerous - colleague who understood what Jack was trying to do. I like the way he irked me by making bullets for others to fire, a surefire meddler. Lois and Martha can get occasional looks-in.

And in the middle of it all of course, Gwen with Rhys in tow. Even if Jack did come back his role might be more politically motivated by liasing with a higher authority who would find TW useful specialists, but meddle all the same. Yes, it dispels the TW myth of being outside of government and beyond the United Nations, but as COE demonstrated if the PM wanted Jack and co neutered they could - and indeed did.

I like Torchwood but loved "Children Of Earth" for it's bold premise which managed to carry through the more unlikely aspects with it because the drama was well-written over which were the sci-fi overtones. Without suspending my disbelief (which I've had to do many times with any number of other productions in the past, sci-fi and otherwise) I would have been too critical. Torchwood is something different so I want it to survive, even in an altered format. A wider band of available personnel for the week's mission in question would allow flexibility and hopefully reduce the bodycount!

That's my fourpenn'orth. I'll wait to see what RTD has up his sleeve I suppose. . . .

In regards to UNIT, I don't know the full story but didn't the United Nations complain about the use of their name in connection to UNIT??

They did, a while ago.

I believe that is the case with UNIT, and when RTD started up DW again, there was the request to change the designation of the acronym. Though I was surprised that the UNIT leader did actually refer to the U.N. bringing them up to a yellow alert when he was talking to Frobisher in the office.

UNIT has played a bigger role in some of the DW episodes, particularly with the Adipose and the more recent Planet of the Dead episodes.

The UN complained of the connection implyed the first time we see UNIT properly in DW its called Unified Intelligance taskforce i think. It just makes it seem cheap that they had to change its name
