View Full Version : Let's talk S3

With absolute and total respect... [spoiler:arpm75gz]...for those at a loss and grieving over certain events of S3...[/spoiler:arpm75gz] ...I thought it might be an idea to start a thread for those who would like to discuss the series as a whole, possibly even agree with me that it was a brilliant SF drama - but without stepping on the toes of those who are upset.
I can't understand the doom-mongering myself, even if the option for S4 isn't picked up straight away - I feel Day5 ended wide open for a number of possibilities, and would consider it such a shame if... [spoiler:arpm75gz]...the dwindling Hub staff couldn't bounce back for another day.[/spoiler:arpm75gz]
[spoiler:arpm75gz]As for Jack going off on his travels...[/spoiler:arpm75gz] ....well, to me, that's all he's done. Which he did... [spoiler:arpm75gz]...at the end of S1 to meet up with the Doctor[/spoiler:arpm75gz] - I don't see there being anything different now.
Anyhoo... I'm waffling now.
[spoiler:arpm75gz]P.S. Ianto was one of my favourite characters too, believe it or not - and I am also pretty gutted... but that seems to have passed some people by<<<< rant over [/spoiler:arpm75gz]
P.P.S. Sorry about all the spoiler tags - but this is visible on the home page.

 It would be great to have a thread to discuss the positive side of season 3.
It was edge of seat drama, and held me by the tv for the full hour each of the five nights it was shown . Ok it maybe that we have to wait for season 4, but if its of the calibre of season 3, I it will be mind blowingly brilliant :good:

I think the acting in Series 3 was amazing and all the child actors did a fantastic job which really should be noted! :)
It was edge of the seat stuff thats for sure!

Something that has annoyed me (apart from the obvious) is that a lot of fans are saying that Gwen lost nothing. [spoiler:2490d7qv]They're obviously forgetting the fact that one of her best friends died and the other just left the planet![/spoiler:2490d7qv]
Anyway. As a whole, this series was absolutely amazing! The ending (as much as I hated it) was the right thing to do. It either leaves it open or is there as making it the final series. Personally, I want more!

Apart from the obvious...I loved CoE, the acting, the writing, the drama, comedy...amazing. Absolutely adored Ianto's family! [spoiler:2sgk2z4y]Although Ianto's death was awfully heartbreaking[/spoiler:2sgk2z4y], it was so amazingly well acted and written. Very good job done overall by the team!

personally i think there were enough clues to hint at a new team and more series, i think gwen will restart torchwood after her baby is born, and she will bring in (apologies as iv'e forgotten the characters names) the young black girl who was helping them, shes an obvious, the government woman who wore the contacts at the end and the police officer who threw his job away by fighting the army, and jack will be back after 2 or 3 episodes

Okay, as a whole, I though the series did okay. Not brilliant, certainly not the best they've done, but still it did okay. It had some amazing moments in it, especially the children who were spot on every single time. I loved that. And *some* of the new characters were brilliant; Lois, Bridget and John. (Less brilliant was Alice. She seemed so 2D is was daft.) And I thought Days 1, 2 and 3 were fantastic. So was 4 to be honest, but the ending shattered it for me a bit too much. I just think that Day 5 really really let it down.
Personally,[spoiler:1pga9ho7]and this is without taking into account the loss of characters,[/spoiler:1pga9ho7] I think they tried too hard. They weren't really prepared to stretch a storyline over five hours and gave it their best shot, which is to be commended really, but it didn't work as well as it could have done. Scenes went on too long and it grew stringy at the end.
Opinion over

CoE were, to me, wonderful adult sci-fi with a message. A bit on the dark side for my taste (being a father you might understand why), but still an amazing story put together by very talented writers. And I'm quite confident that if there will be a S4 the ending we've seen couldn't have been better.
As long as PC Andy is in it I'll watch it. I've got a lot of respect for him now.

it was a very very good piece of drama, every night had me gripped to my chair wondering whats gonna go on but the ending overshadowed all the work that was done for the rest of it.
If they could have given it a more definate answer to what would happen to TW then i would have been happier but it is open. There could be a new series but we're all looking on the negative (no disrespect i am too!) side when we shouldnt be

I agree with this thread!!!
Time makes things better, as I'm learning.
[spoiler:4odprkke]Ianto's death was horrible......I'm a devestated Janto fan....Love them to death. Fan Fics are a great creation[/spoiler:4odprkke]
But to say COE was an insult to fans, in my humble opinion, is a comment against John, Gareth, and Eve for their months of hard work. :nono:
We had an action packed series, high drama and emotion, spine chilling plot, excellent music and effects. And also ratings gold. The ratings are double, nearly triple to Series 1 and 2. I was shocked by the numbers!!! It was an excellent story....I just can't deny that. :clapper:
With these ratings, it will be back. And stronger and better than ever!!
[spoiler:4odprkke]I feel after some searching, Jack will realize this is where he belongs and he will get Torchwood back up and running, in memory of not only Ianto xx but Tosh and Owen. They died heroes.[/spoiler:4odprkke]
I was shocked at first, but as time goes by I see what a great series it was. We just need time to absorb the events.
Torchwood will be back.....We have to be ready for the 21st century after all.....Everything is beginning to Change. Just as Jack said.
This is just my opinion :)

Children and small animals, to paraphrase WC Fields are always difficult to work with (mainly because he felt they upstaged him.)
Those children on all fronts were brilliant. Kudos to Euros for tackling that job!
This was a series that went under the skin and into that instinctive core in each of us. That's why it is so disturbing to watch. Well, that, and the even more disturbing image of government at work and how one could see that conversation actually happening behind closed doors.
And the children angle - brilliant. Even for this viewer who mostly considers children a nuisance until they talk coherently  I had an emotional reaction to the scenes with the parents in episode 5, especially the scenes with Gwen, Rhys and the kids.
Brilliantly done.
In some ways, the emotional reaction to this series reminds me of that old movie during the 80's called The Day After. For those who don't remember it, it was a movie dealing with nuclear war and how the world reacts after one happens.
At the time I was working at a community tv station and we had set up a live wrap around tv show for the community to discuss their reactions to the movie as it aired on the network. People called in with questions and in some ways there was that same emotional gut reaction - people's triggers had been hit, it scared them, and they needed to talk about it. Similar stations all over the country did the same, allowing people an outlet to discuss something that was horrifying to them.
What wasn't possible in the 80's (a global discussion of such a disturbing event) is today. And so here we sit, flooding the boards with our words.
That is a huge testament to the writers, the actors and the crew of this series who put it together.

Brillant I couldn't have put it better myself.
My favourite were particulary the government cabinet meeting they were so well played[spoiler:7evf8e8w]and also in episode 5 when Frobishers secretary reveals that she is wearing the TW contact lenses.[/spoiler:7evf8e8w]
To this I will add Ianto when he comes into Hub2 with the shopping, and Gwen telling Alice that her 'gorgeous husband' has the laptop. Oh and anything Ianto said :blusher:

It had everything and more what I want from a good drama.
It crawls under skin and takes an emotional rollercoaster.
My heart really broke for Captain Jack.
[spoiler:cgckur6h]Losing everything and then still have to life on with all those memories and most of all guilt.
No wonder,he wanted to leave.
It wasn`t a cowardly action but an action of a man broken to the core of his being.
I absolutly loved how he not only mentioned Ianto and Stephan but also Tosh,Owen and Suzie.
That is a lot of guilt for one man[/spoiler:cgckur6h]
I feel for Gwen too
[spoiler:cgckur6h],cause while she did get her happy ending, with her husband and baby.
She did lost her friends and is left behind to pick up the pieces.[/spoiler:cgckur6h]

yay! great topic! i like reading the positives. :good:
It was brilliant to be able to watch a really great piece of TV, over 5 nights as well, and it really did drain me, but i didnt mind, it was worth it!
And the best thing is- i converted the rest of my family too!! i'd gone on about it for weeks, and they all came into the living room last monday at 9pm and sat with me, pretending not to be interested but really they were.
and i could actually have a full discussion with them too! havent been able to do that before.
Fantastic acting, directing, special effects, etc etc. (despite the sad twist of course)

john, gareth and eve were all fantastic and so were the supporting actors! you just couldnt fault them especially peter capaldi!
[spoiler:9c9fz2c0]im also not angry at any of the writers about the whole ianto dieing arguement thats going around, it was there choice and yes i was as heartbroken as the next ianto fan i cried for like 2 days a pot of coffee set me off crying for god sakes! lol but the scene was stunning and it was a great exit for him and beautifully acted[/spoiler:9c9fz2c0]
overall at the end of the day i loved watching it and it entertained me and thats all i was after and i actually got alot more than i expected i didnt expect the storyline to be so huge dont know why :dontknow: i guess im saying it surpased my expectations

I thing S3 was very good and it is to bad how some people react.
[spoiler:c8jgcnis]I am really gutted about Ianto dying and to be honnest i still cry about it, even after a few days. It had a big effect on me. But i don't go off getting angry at writers and stuff, what good will that do. You don't do that to people.[/spoiler:c8jgcnis]
Everyone did a great job and i hope there will be a season 4
[spoiler:c8jgcnis]Okay now i go of and cry some more[/spoiler:c8jgcnis]

I loved Series 3 despite how dark it was. [spoiler:32vrjx25]I really felt for Steven's Mom and Jack when he lost his partner, his daughter and grandson.[/spoiler:32vrjx25] Superb acting and very well written.
I personally feel that if they had followed the format of Series I and II (although I enjoyed them) I don't think they would have had such good ratings on BBC 1. In the present climate low ratings would have guaranteed that the show would be axed. As it is I have high hopes for series 4.

I can't stop watching the end of Day 5 with the conversation between Gwen and Jack. At first, it felt like that that was it but the more I watch it, the more I want it there to be a season 4 and I feel that there is gonna be a season 4. *crosses fingers* Here's hoping!

All I can say is that I was, and still am, stunned. Even BSG did'nt quite manage that :-)
I thoroughly "enjoyed" it all, and just received the DVD today. I will eventually get to watch it again, just not feeling able to go through it all at the moment.
Bestest Wishes

I think a lot of people who have the DVD feel like that at the moment, I am the same, bought it yesterday but can't bring myself to watch it for a few weeks. Not until they confirm season 4 anyway..... :beg:

Hiya
Definitely getting better - took the shrink wrapping off the DVD and opened the box this evening, may even watch it this weekend.
I have reinforcements for the after effects this time, got a new copy of Independence Day to replace my current damaged copy.
Bestest wishes

Brilliant, somewhere to chat about how cool it was!
I have to agree with the positives here- I thought CoE was epic. Having gone back and rewatched it once I got over the intitial shocks of what happened, I reckon they did a superb job. I was glued to the telly for each of the five parts. Excellent SFX, marvellous acting and the story was gripping to say the least.
[spoiler:o4hy08l5]Still can't believe they killed off Ianto, but I don't really want a magic reset bringing him back- I think that would cheapen the whole thing.[/spoiler:o4hy08l5]
Still kinda sad about some of the events, but it was what was promised from the beginning- dark, adult themes. I'm glad there was still a fair bit of humour thrown in too-
[spoiler:o4hy08l5]The breakout of Jack had me chuckling the whole way through, it was brilliant! Plus there's a tiny shallow part of me that loved the fact that they never bothered to give Jack any clothes once he'd regenerated! The look on Gwens face when she was handing him Rhys's coat in the quarry was hilarious, and I found it very amusing that all he then did was sling it over his shoulder- actually a very good bit of characterisation- if sexual taboos are pretty much moot in the future, why would a bit of public nudity be a problem?
I also thought that Jack running away at the end was very realistic- part of him is broken, and he needs time to heal and learn to live with the guilt of the latest round of terrible things he's had to do. I really don't think he's a monster, he just had to make an incredibly tough call- one or millions.[/spoiler:o4hy08l5]
All in all, I loved it- yes, it was dark and disturbing, but Torchwood was always meant to be the dark, scary mature offspring of the whoniverse, and to my mind it's come of age.
Personally, I'd say things are still wide open for season 4. Bring it on!
