Torchwood: Children of Earth was watched by 5.9 million viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures. The programme was the most 5th watched programme of the day and the 2nd highest rated on BBC1, being beaten by the three main soaps. The programme won its timeslot with an audience share of 25.8%.

Final figures will be available in two weeks time.

Don't forget this will not include BBCHD viewers or iplayer hits so encourage people to watch the BBC3 repeats and to click it up on iplayer as it all counts. With iplayer even if you've seen it you can just click it up on a new tab and let it run for an hour with the sound down if you want to add to the numbers as it all helps get closer to 13 episodes on BBC1 :neo:

A quarter share of the viewing figures at that time of day is pretty good surely? Consdiering how manay channels there are to choose from... Quality wins through!?

Oh yeah, good figures so far and more to come is my point, so encourage people to get on iplayer and stream the eps - every viewing on there counts, it's only an hour and you don't have to watch it again so soon if you've already seen it, just stream it and do something else :clapper:

Very good figures for the first show. If you add iPlayer, HD and BBC Three viewers as well it should be well over 6 million. Hopefully they don't drop too much tomorrow. Looking at the listings they should rise.

6 million is enough for a fourth season, surely!

Torchwood move sees ratings boost

Torchwood follows secret agents battling human and alien enemies

Sci-fi drama Torchwood has seen a leap in ratings with its move from BBC Two to BBC One.

The first episode of the third series was watched by 5.9 million viewers - the average audience for series two ranged between 2.5 and 4.2 million.

The third series was cut from 13 episodes to five and is being shown on consecutive days throughout the week.

Torchwood star John Barrowman said cutting eight shows for the move felt like "we were being punished".

"Other shows move from BBC Three and Two to One and they don't get cut. So why are we? It felt like every time we moved we had to prove ourselves," the actor told the Radio Times.

Doctor Who spin-off

The BBC said it wanted to create "a powerful sense of event" with Torchwood: Children of Earth.

The third series follows the alien-chasing team as they battle for the future of the human race against the fiercest force they have encountered.

John Barrowman stars as Captain Jack Harkness - Eve Myles returns as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd reprises his role as Ianto Jones.

Torchwood, a spin-off from Doctor Who, began life on BBC Three in 2007 - its highest audience during the first series was just under one million viewers.

That's brilliant news! If that keeps up throughout the week, and climbs higher with iPlayer and BBC3 repeats we'll get a fourth season surely! They'd be mad not to.

I like the fact they're factoring in the net views as well. That was an important thing for Fox and the renewal of Dollhouse. It's good to see that they're taking notice of more than just the actual airing.

Thanks for passing along the numbers - I tried to look last night but didn't find anything posted.

Let's hope they keep that up!
